• "My Mother's Words"

  1 memoir. Consists of a memoir, entitled "My Mother's Words," about the experiences of Eva Roth, written, transcribed, and edited by her daughter, Marion Amsellem. In Mrs. Roth's memoir, she describes wartime life after her escape from Poland to Russia with her husband, who died in Samarkand during the war. She was remarried to Sol Roth in a displaced persons camp and they immigrated to the United States and reunited with some of Sol's siblings, who had been able to immigrate prior to the war. • "Tishkovska Saga"

  2008. Consists of one memoir, 122 pages, in Russian, entitled "Tishkovska Saga," by Dora Malina Aizenshtein, originally of Moscow, Russia. In May 1941, Dora and her sister were left in the care of relatives in the Ukraine and spent several years under German occupation. After escaping from a small camp near Gaysin (Haisyn) and living on the run and in hiding until she was able to reunite with her family in the summer of 1944. • Boris Gurevich papers

  1942-1944. 3 folders. The Boris Gurevich papers contain letters written by Boris Gurevich to his siblings while he was serving as a captain in the Soviet Union’s Red Army between 1942 and 1944. Gurevich, a Latvian-born Jew, served in the Army from the outbreak of war in 1940 until he was killed in action near Kovel in 1944. In his letters, Boris enquires frequently about his family’s health and food availability and describes his situation as a student in military training and later, as a soldier. Many of his letters describe his own health, food rations, uniforms, and his daily activities in training and in his free time. • Joseph Winkler memoir

  1974. 1 box (1 CD-ROM, 1 family tree). Consists of one memoir, 660 pages, untitled, by Joseph Winkler, originally born in Sambor, Galicia, in 1903. The memoir was dictated in August 1974 and transcribed. In his memoir, Mr. Winkler describes his childhood, life under Russian occupation during World War I, and seeing his town become Polish territory. He got a job at a petroleum refinery in Drohobycz in 1927, received his doctorate in chemistry, and met and married Eugenia (Genia) Weidenfeld, with whom he had a daughter, Lili. He describes the German invasion of Poland in 1939 and life under the Russian occupation. After the Germans invaded in 1941, Dr. Winkler separated from his wife and daughter and fled into Russia, where he worked until the end of the war. In the summer of 1944, he returned to Drohobycz to discover that his Genia and Lili had been killed in 1942. In October 1944, he married Aniela (Nellie) Lurie and immigrated back to Poland. As a refinery expert, he viewed the IG Farben plant in Auschwitz immediately after the liberation of the camp. Nellie gave birth to a daughter, Maria, in 1945, and Joseph went to the United States as a Polish representative to try to convince Polish scientists to return to Europe. He returned briefly to Poland and immigrated with Nellie and Maria to the United States in 1947, living first in New Jersey, and then in California. Joseph and Nellie had a son, John, in 1953. • Marie Warschawsky manuscript

  1881-1964 (inclusive). 1 manuscript. One bound copy of a manuscript related to the life of Marie Warschawsky (1881-1964). The manuscript contains handwritten testimony and copies of personal documents and photographs. Mrs. Warschawsky was a nurse in Russia before moving to France in 1922.
