• Albert Aaron Johnson (1880-1963)

  Papers, 1884–1963, 5 boxes and 1 package. Agricultural economist, educator, and authority on the early Soviet Union. Family correspondence, diaries, writings, patents, and other materials. Some items concern his trips to the Soviet Union. Unpublished inventory.

• Albert Goldman (1898-1961?)

  Papers, 1940–59, 1 ft. Labor attorney, socialist, and communist. Leon Trotskii's counsel in Mexico, 1936–40. As a Trotskyist he was convicted of sedition in Minneapolis in 1941 and expelled from the Communist Party as an anti-Stalinist. He was successively a member of the Socialist Workers Party, the Workers Party, and other groups sympathetic to socialism. A change of heart about Russia led him to try to become reinstated to the bar. Correspondence, 1940–59 but primarily 1948, ca. 300 letters, concerns these later phases of his career. The 1948 letters (and later ones) often refer to Trotskii, but no items to or from him are among these papers. Also, notes and trial briefs, annotated pamphlets by Goldman, and clippings. • Albert W. Levin (b. 1887)

  Papers, 1962–63, 2 items. Russian Jew who immigrated to Racine, Wisconsin. Biographical sketches, written in 1962 and 1963. One has a description of the shtetl in Uzda and his life there until age 19.

• Alexander Gumberg (1887-1939)

  Papers, 1904–39, 35 boxes. Russian-born U.S. immigrant, adviser to American financial and business concerns on political, economic, and cultural relations with the USSR. Probably the most important individual in the U.S. in promoting American business with Russia in the years preceding U.S. diplomatic recognition of the Soviet Union. In New York Gumberg had worked with Leon Trotskii on a newspaper. He returned to Russia in 1917–18, becoming involved with American businesses, the American Red Cross, and the (Creel) Committee on Public Information. At this time he became acquainted with Raymond Robins. His papers for 1917–18 contain some material on the Revolution and the emergence of the new economy. Correspondents include G. V. Chicherin, F. Dzerzhinsky, V. I. Lenin, V. Molotov, and Trotskii. In papers for 1917–24 there are also data on Soviet-American relations, the Soviet Union Information Bureau, and the All-Russian Textile Institute. Gumberg was Senator William E. Borah's adviser and source of information on Russian conditions, once he returned to the U.S. Correspondents at this time include Borah, Robins, William Henry Chamberlin, Louis Fischer, John Reed, Boris Sivirsky, and Upton Sinclair. In the 1920s Gumberg promoted closer economic ties between the U.S. and USSR, and American recognition of the Soviet Union, particularly through his work with the American-Russian Chamber of Commerce. He was an assistant to both Reeve Schley and Colonel Hugh Cooper when they were president of that organization. (Schley was also with the Chase National Bank.) The collection is rich in materials on the American-Russian Chamber of Commerce and on Amtorg, the Soviet trading corporation in the U.S. Among other persons and subjects covered are: the Geneva Disarmament Conference of 1927–28 (Gumberg reported on it); the Moscow trials of 1936–38 and the political figures involved in them; his own brother, Veniamin Gombarg, vicepresident of a Soviet chemical syndicate and purge victim; the appointment of Joseph E. Davies as ambassador to the Soviet Union; Dwight W. Morrow; Peter A. Bogdanov; Louis Adamic; James A. Frear; Maurice Hindus; L. A. Serebriakoff; Lincoln Steffens; Oswald G. • Alfred Senn

  Papers, unprocessed, 6 cartons and 1 box. Linguist who specialized in Lithuanian language and culture. He lived and taught in Lithuania, 1921–30, and was active in both the political and cultural life of the newly independent state. Among his acquaintances were the philologists Max Niedermann (extensive correspondence in this collection), Jonas Jablonskis, and Kazimieras Buga; and the writers Juozas Tumas-Vaizgantas and Vincas Kreve-Mickevicius. Also, Professor Senn's diaries. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1930 but maintained ties with Lithuania and worked to aid Lithuanians before and after World War II. Note: Some papers of his son, Professor Alfred E. Senn of the University of Wisconsin, are eventually to come to the Society. These papers include some tape recorded oral history interviews (and transcriptions) with Mykolas Birziska and Vaclovas Sidzikauskas and correspondence with Steponas Kairys concerning Lithuanian politics, especially the Social Democratic movement.

• Alvah Bessie (b. 1904)

  Papers, 1947–63, 8 boxes. Reporter, screenwriter, and one of the Hollywood Ten. Among his letters, legal materials, scripts, speeches, and clippings are items relating to the confrontation between the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) and the Hollywood Ten.

  Radio scripts, 1960–61, 6 boxes. Russian-language scripts for Radio Liberty broadcasts from Munich, Germany, to the USSR, with English translations. Scripts are for every eighth day. (NUCMC 68–2305)

• American Federation of Labor

  Records, 1881–1952, 218 ft. Files of various offices or divisions of the AFL, including papers of presidents Samuel Gompers and William Green, economist Boris Shishkin, and research director Florence Thorne. Contains a general and book review file for the American Federationist, also materials on World War I, World War II, and post-war problems. Unpublished inventory (NUCMC 62–3458).

• Annette Jacobi Roberts

• Austin H. Kiplinger (b. 1918)

  Papers, 1951–59, 2 boxes. Reporter and news commentator. He went to the Soviet Union in 1959. Includes notes on this trip, as well as radio and television news broadcast scripts, 1951–56, and correspondence, 1955–56. Scripts cover, in part, the Korean War, Senator Joseph R. • Boris S. Glagolin

  Actor, chief director of the Moscow Theatre of the Revolution, and later a director in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Includes an undated article, "The Liberty of the Russian Theatre," about his experiences ca. 1905–27; and an article by N. N. Evreinoff, "Boris S. Glagolin, the Actor."

• Bornett L. Bobroff (d. 1946)

  Papers, 1904–46, 1 box. Inventor and businessman. Emigrated from Russia to the U.S. in 1904. In 1917 the Bobroff voting machine was adopted by the Wisconsin Assembly, the first such device in the nation. He eventually became president of the Teleoptic Company of Racine, which manufactured his automobile turn signal invention. Most of the materials concern his patents and inventions.

• Charles Henry Hawes (1867-1943)

  Papers, 1899–1906, 1 package. British traveler in Russia, 1901. Author of In the Uttermost East. Includes notes on his reading about Siberian tribes and Sakhalin Island, and on his conversations with Russian Empire inhabitants. (NUCMC 62–1788)

• Clarence J. Primm (fl. ca. 1918)

  Correspondence, 1918–19, 9 items. U.S. Army lieutenant stationed at Archangel as a member of the 339th Infantry in the North Russian Expeditionary Forces. Letters to his wife describe conditions he observed in northern Russia.

• Creed C. Black (b. 1925)

  Papers, 1943–69, 16 boxes. Journalist and editor. Traveled to the Soviet Union in 1962. His private business files contain material on the trip. Unpublished inventory. (Papers are held on deposit only.)

• David John Bradley (b. 1915)

  Papers, 1940–65, 1 box. Free-lance writer, interested in the Russo-Finnish War (Winter War) of 1939–40. He became a war correspondent for the Wisconsin State Journal, went to Finland (too late to cover the brief conflict), and ended up writing several articles about the Finns. In the 1960s he wrote a book about Finland and its people (Lion Among Roses); much of the collection concerns this book.

• DeWitt Clinton Poole (1885-1952)

  Papers, ca. 1920–52, 12 boxes. Diplomat and educator, served in the U.S. consular service in Russia, 1917–21. In World War II he was director of the Foreign Nationalities Branch of the Office of Strategic Services, 1941–45. Contains notes and drafts of Poole's lectures on, among other topics, the American mission to Russia, 1917–24; also, letters, articles, and notes of his career, the Russian Revolution, Soviet diplomacy and foreign relations, U.S. diplomatic recognition of the USSR in 1933, Kremlin-Vatican relations, and Stalin's plans for establishing a new Polish government. There are notes from 1951 of an interview with George F. Kennan on the need for foreign educational exchanges with the U.S. (NUCMC 62–2914)

• Domor (fl. ca. 1919)

  U.S. Army sergeant. Letter, 15 January 1919, from him to his commanding officer (Company F, 339th Infantry, American Expeditionary Force, Kholmogory, Russia) containing a list of men at Kholmogory and at Pinega.

• Draper Manuscripts

  Collection, ca. 1750–1927, ca. 500 vols. Subdivided into 50 series of materials. In the section of Frontier War MSS (Series U, 23 vols.) are letters of Charles S. Todd, American statesman and minister to Russia in 1841–46, in vol. 8. The Pittsburgh and Northwest Virginia MSS (Series MN, 10 vols.) have transcripts of correspondence of the Russian-born Baron Gustavus Henri de Rosenthal (known as John Rose in America). Rosenthal, of Baltic origin, left Russia after a duel, came to Baltimore in 1776 and studied surgery, then joined Pennsylvania troops and fought in the American Revolutionary War. General William Irvine made him a staff officer at Fort Pitt in 1781. He returned to Russia in 1784, was pardoned by the tsar, and lived on his family estate until his death in 1830. Although he never revisited America, he corresponded with Irvine after his return home, discussing the war, the Crawford campaign of 1782, and other reminiscences. The volume in which the letters are kept has a detailed index. In Virginia MSS (Series ZZ, 14 vols.) are the manuscript "Letters of a Russian Spy," which were published in the Chillicothe Gazette in 1825–26. Published guide in preparation.

• Edward Alsworth Ross (1866-1951)

  Papers, 1859–1951, 31 boxes and 9 vols. Sociologist. 4 notebooks for 1917–18 contain observations made in Russia. He refers to the Bolshevik Revolution, social conditions, and an interview with Leon Trotskii on 9 December 1917. Also, several letters about his trip (made under the auspices of the American Institute of Social Service) and about his articles on Russia. Unpublished inventory and shelf list (NUCMC 68–2317).

• Edward P. Morgan (b. 1910)

  Papers, 1955–59, 109 boxes. News analyst, commentator, and correspondent. References to Soviet subjects occur in his news broadcasts. Unpublished inventory (NUCMC 61–2952).

  Papers, 1953–61, 1 folder. Unpublished summary of her findings in an investigation of the extent and impact of the Hollywood Blacklist resulting from HUAC hearings, 1952–53, plus copies of 4 published articles on this subject.

• Farrell Dobbs

  Papers, 1928-1983. 6.8 c.f. (17 archives boxes) and 16 reels of microfilm (35mm). Papers of Farrell Dobbs, a former national secretary (1952-1972) and Presidential candidate of the Socialist Workers Party. Included are biographical material, clippings, and Dobbs' FBI file; official party and personal research correspondence; subject files; speeches and writings; and reports to the party. The subject files consist of collected correspondence and original documents pertaining to his four-volume history of the origins of the Teamsters Union, a planned multi-volume history of American radicalism, and to a variety of topics in SWP history such as the Fourth International, Trotskyist factionalism of the 1950's and 1960's, and relations with the Young Socialists of America. Dobbs' experiences as a leader of the Minneapolis Teamsters strikes of 1934 are represented by collected records from other union activists, correspondence, minutes, clippings, flyers, and general research material. The collection also contains a small amount of material relating to Dobbs' wife, Marvel Scholl, including a 1934 diary and writings about the role of women in the Teamsters strikes. • Fred Halstead

  Papers, 1956-1978. 4.1 c.f. (10 archives boxes and 1 oversize folder), 1 tape recording, and 17 photographs (1 folder). Papers of Halstead, a Socialist Workers Party presidential candidate and leading opponent of U.S. involvement in the War in Vietnam. The collection consists of correspondence and research files for his book Out Now: A Participant's Account of the American Movement Against the Vietnam War (1978) and records of various anti-war organizations, most notably the Fifth Avenue Vietnam Peace Parade Committee, New Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, National Peace Action Coalition (NPAC), National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE), and the Student Mobilization Committee (SMC). Also included are subject files containing publicity material, press releases, correspondence, agendas and proposals for individual conferences, demonstrations, and GI civil liberties. • George Hopkins Johnson (1901-1974)

  Papers, 1860s-1972, 4 boxes and 2 cassette tapes. Businessman (Gisholt Machine Company). Served on the War Production Board during World War II. In 1945 he went to Germany and Moscow as a member of the American delegation of the Allied Commission on Reparations. Papers include letters, a diary, reports, memoranda, speeches, and notes, covering his family and his career. In the Gisholt Machine Company records (box 4) are correspondence and contracts for several balancing machines to be delivered to the Russians shortly after the end of World War II. Several folders (box 2) in his personal papers contain information about post-war production conditions in Eastern Europe. Unpublished finding aid.

  Papers, 1897–98 and n.d., 1 folder. U.S. military attache in St. Petersburg, 1897–98. Contains letters written home from Russia, photocopies.

• George Novack and Evelyn Reed

  Papers, 1933-1992. 11 reels of microfilm (35mm). Papers of George Novack, a leader of the Socialist Workers Party best known for his writing on Marxian philosophy and his Marxian historical interpretations, together with papers of his wife, Evelyn Reed, an anthropologist and fellow Trotskyist. The papers include interviews and biographical material, correspondence, and speeches and writings. There are papers on Novack's leadership of the American Committee for the Defense of Leon Trotsky and the Civil Rights Defense Committee. Reed's papers largely concern her work as a Marxist anthropologist and her views on the oppression of women in society. • Hannah Brain Campbell (1880-1973)

  Papers, 1921–73, 1 folder. Siberian prospector. Letters, writings, and articles mainly concern Campbell and her family as goldminers in Siberia, 1917–18; the aftermath of the Bolshevik takeover there; and her freighter journey for the Red Cross, escorting European Russian children back to their families.

• Hans von Kaltenborn (1878-1965)

  Papers, 1883–1962, 100 ft. News broadcaster, became known as the "Dean of American Radio Commentators." Correspondence, 1902–64, radio scripts, 1927–60, television scripts, 1951–60, film scripts, 1939–61, notebooks, 1926–61, and scrapbooks. Ca. 500 disc and 23 tape recordings cover his broadcasts, mainly 1940–48, interviews, and panel discussions. International affairs and the Soviet Union are topics well represented in the collection. • Helen Zotos (b. 1923)

• Herbert Biberman and Gale Sondergaard

  Papers, 182 boxes, several vols., 2 microfilm reels, and 1 film. Film director (1 of the Hollywood Ten) and his actress wife. Original deposit included correspondence, writings, and scripts relating to their careers in films and to their political activities. Includes a 10-minute film documentary entitled The Hollywood Ten. Additional papers, for 1946–65, are of Biberman's lawyers and concern, in part, the Council of Soviet-American Friendship (box 61, folders 4–5). Original papers are in part restricted in access. • Herman Levin (b. 1907)

  Papers, 1948–56, 183 boxes and 10 packages. Theatrical producer. Ca. 66% of the collection pertains to the Broadway musical My Fair Lady. Some files are on foreign and foreign-language productions, including the Russian tour. A film entitled "Tours of American Artists in Russia" is about The Liza Company (My Fair Lady). • Hilmar R. Baukhage (b. 1889)

  Papers, 1915–62, 4 boxes, 5 tape and 26 disc recordings. Journalist, radio news commentator, and lecturer. Letters, broadcast scripts, 1944–57, personal journals, 1915 and 1942–53, speeches, 1941–62, and other items. In box 3, folder 1 is material relating to Russia.

• Howard K. Smith (b. 1914)

  Papers, 1941–48 and 1957–61, 12 boxes (additions expected). News commentator and correspondent. Includes radio scripts 1941–45, some reporting the signing of the German surrender in Marshall Georgi Zhukov's headquarters in Berlin. Smith was the only American broadcaster present. • Howard Koch (b. 1902)

  Papers, 1937–76, 7 boxes. Author of radio scripts, plays, and film scripts. He wrote the screenplay for Mission to Moscow (1943), the movie adaptation of Ambassador Joseph Davies' book. The script, photographs, clippings, and notes on the film are among the papers. In addition, there are letters, statements, transcripts, and clippings relating to the Hollywood blacklist. • International News for the Fourth International, (1934-1935)

  1 box (0.2 cubic ft.) This very small collection chiefly consists of manuscripts and mimeographed copies of International News for the Fourth International, paper written chiefly by Hugo Oehler, a Trotskyist who in the 1930s dissented from the Trotskyist mainstream and for some years was the main inspirer of extremely tiny splinter groups.

• International Workingmen's Association

  Records, 1868–77, 2 microfilm reels. Divided into 4 sections: records of the General Council, 1871–74; records of the Central Committee, North American Federal Council, 1868–77; records of Section 26 (Philadelphia), 1871–76; and records of Section 1 (St. Louis), 1870–77. Correspondence, minutes, clippings, broadsides, convention resolutions and proceedings, financial records, and miscellany; some items in French and German. A few items relate to Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. Entire collection is on microfilm, for which there is a published guide (1972). (NUCMC 62–1943)

• Internationalist Tendency of the Socialist Workers Party

  Records, 1966-1979. 10.4 c.f. (10 record center cartons and 1 archives box). Files of the Internationalist Tendency of the Socialist Workers Party, which was formed in 1973, expelled from the Socialist Workers Party in 1974, and continued independently until 1976. The collection documents the organization's activities and affiliation with the Socialist Workers Party and other Marxist and Communist groups through correspondence, financial records, political articles, conference reports, and publications, some of which are in French and Spanish. Papers of historian and socialist Jack Alan Robbins, consisting of texts and drafts of his two doctoral dissertations on American Trotskyism and French Marxism; drafts, notes, and reference material for other articles and writings; annotated copies of many of the writings of Leon Trotsky; book reviews; copies of the Democratic Left Book Review and Ripples in the Stream; and fragmentary correspondence. • James Archibald Frear (1861-1939)

  Papers, 3 boxes and 6 vols. Lawyer and U.S. congressman. He made an unofficial tour of Russia in 1923 with Senators Ladd (North Dakota) and King (Utah). Some correspondence, April-July 1923, concerns the trip. This "Unofficial Commission to Russia" was sponsored by the Hearst publishing firm. Also, the itinerary of the group, August 4–8. (NUCMC 62–2422) Note: The Society's museum holds a scrapbook of pictures taken by Frear on this tour of the USSR.

• James P. Cannon

  Papers, 1919-1975. 24.2 c.f. (61 archives boxes) and 65 reels of microfilm (35mm). Papers of James P. Cannon, a writer, historian, founder of the Socialist Workers Party, and leader of the world Trotskyist movement. Included is biographical material primarily related to his early experiences in the Industrial Workers of the World and the Communist Party; correspondence; bibliographies and draft versions of speeches and writings; minutes, leaflets, position statements, and other collected documents of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and its forerunners such as the Communist League of America; and papers of his wife Rose Karsner who was also active in the party. The correspondence includes personal and family letters, some of which were written during his imprisonment for violations of the Smith Act, and many exchanges with Farrell Dobbs and other leaders of the SWP and leaders of other American leftist parties such as A.J. Muste of the American Workers Party, Max Shachtman and James Burnham of the Workers Party, and Norman Thomas and Eugene V. Debs of the Socialist Party. Extensive records concern the Fourth International; the activities of Trotskyist organizations in England, France, and other countries; relations with Leon Trotsky and Natalia Sedova during their residence in Mexico; the factional doctrines of Michel Pablo, Hugo Oehler, and Bert Cochran; and disputes within the radical movement over the coming of World War II. • John B. Oakes (b. 1913)

  Papers, 1932–65, 4 microfilm reels. Editor of the New York Times editorial page. Alphabetical subject file of correspondence, book reviews, reports, minutes of meetings, speeches, notes, article drafts, and other materials, some concerning the Soviet Union. Unpublished inventory.

• John Fischer (b. 1910)

  Papers, 1945–63, ca. 3 ft., additions expected. Writer and editor of Harper's Magazine, 1953–67. At present about half the materials relate to his books and articles, particularly Why They Behave Like Russians (1947; published in Europe as The Scared Men in the Kremlin). Includes notes, original manuscript, typesetting copy, galley proofs, and articles about the book. Also, original manuscript and typesetting copy of his Master Plan: U.S.A. (1951). • John Gunther 41901-1970)

  Papers, 1938–44, 2 boxes. Journalist and author. Wrote radio scripts about all theaters of operation in World War II. • Leo Lania (1896-1961)

  Papers, ca. 1930s–1950s, 13 boxes. Writer for films, the theater, and broadcast journalism. Among his plays is one entitled Comrade Ivan (January 1951), an outline and notes for which are in box 4 (folder 6). He wrote a number of radio scripts for Radio Free Europe and the Voice of America in 1950–52 (box 8). Box 9 (folder 7) contains a 1948 article about Sergei Eisenstein; and several other articles and clippings concern the Soviet Union 1932–36 and 1952 (box 11). One correspondent was Max Eastman.

• Marquis Childs (b. 1903)

  Papers, 1919–63, 29 boxes. Newspaperman and author. Correspondence, writings, speeches, scripts, interviews, and business files. Box 4 contains notes and memoranda on, inter alia, Moscow. Box 5 has news dispatches filed from Poland and Russia for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Box 6 holds a notebook of rough memoranda, apparently kept during a visit to the USSR in 1958. Much of the correspondence is with prominent political figures in the U.S. Some, in the period 1946–51, concerns charges that Childs had communist sympathies or belonged to communist organizations. For example, on 1 February 1951 he wrote HUAC to deny such accusations. Among his correspondents are Dean Acheson, Charles E. Bohlen, Hubert H. Humphrey, John F. Kennedy, Isaac Don Levine, Henry Cabot Lodge, Richard M. Nixon, Adlai Stevenson, and Harry S. Truman. In box 28 is correspondence, 10 April 1958, of Mikhail A. Menshikov. Boxes 21–27 contain St. Louis Post-Dispatch files, among which are items for 1941–46 on deteriorating Soviet-American relations, the European recovery, the Korean War, and Senator Joseph McCarthy. • Mary Dolores Beales Steers travel journals (1900-1901)

  1 reel of microfilm (35 mm). Detailed and literate journals of Steers' travels with her husband, J. Richard Steers, throughout Europe and Egypt during 1900 and 1901. Included are descriptions of paintings, music, and living conditions in the countries visited (including Norway and Russia), as well as meditations on cultural differences. Although both Steers and her husband were apparently from New York at the time the journals were written, the couple is reported later to have lived in Oconto County, Wisconsin.

• McCormick Collection

  Records and family papers, 1600–1963, 3,692 boxes, 1,983 vols., and 4 packages. Business correspondence pertains, inter alia, to early development of the company's business in Russia, 1879–1902 (marketing only). For later years there are some duplicates of correspondence held in the International Harvester Archives of Chicago. International Harvester was the successor firm to the McCormick Company and established a large sales network plus a major factory at Lyubertsy in Russia, 1902–17. Personal papers of Harold F. McCormick and of Cyrus H. McCormick, Jr., should also contain Russianrelated material.

• Morris Hillquit (1869-1933)

  Papers, 1899–1933, 10 microfilm reels. Leader of the American socialist movement in the 20th c. Born in Riga, he came with his family to the U.S. in 1886, later changing his name from the original Moses Hillkowitz. He joined the Socialist Labor Party in 1887, at the age of 18. He became a lawyer, representing labor leaders and organizations in legal cases throughout his career. Particularly after the Russian Revolution of 1917, Hillquit wrote about party tactics, Marxist philosophy, and related issues. Materials include photographs, biographical data, ca. 200 letters, writings, ephemera, press releases, and clippings. Several items pertain to Maksim Gorkii's fund-raising tour of America, his literary work, his acquaintance with Hillquit, and exiled Russian revolutionary writers. There are letters of Gorkii, Maria Andreevna Peshkova, Ivan Ladyshnikov (Ladyschnikov), and Raphael Rein Abramowitsch. Correspondence of Algernon Lee, Adolph F. Germer, Santeri Nuorteva, Gilbert E. Roe, Isaac A. Hourwich, and Ludwig C. A. K. Martens, 1918–19, sheds light on divisions among American socialists over Bolshevism, attitudes of Finnish-Americans toward V. I. Lenin and the Bolsheviks, "red-baiting" in the U.S., and charges against Martens as representative of the RSFSR Bureau in the United States. • Raymond Robins (1873-1954)

  Papers, 1878–1951, 46 boxes. Social worker, social economist, politician, and lecturer; head of the American Red Cross mission to Russia in 1917. He became personally acquainted with V. I. Lenin and Leon Trotskii. In April-July 1933 he was back in the Soviet Union, where J. V. Stalin and other high-ranking officials received him. At this time (and earlier) Robins was promoting U.S. recognition of the USSR and closer economic ties between the 2 nations. Materials in the collection include: for 1917–18, diaries, letters to his wife, copies of diplomatic correspondence with U.S. Ambassador David R. Francis, and items by or about Lenin, Trotskii, and G. Chicherin, some of which are in Russian. Correspondents in the 1920s include Alexander Gumberg, D. Heywood Hardy, Thomas D. This Russian subsidiary was reputedly the largest firm, domestic or foreign, in Russia in 1914.   4.0 c.f. (10 archives boxes). The records of Solidarity, 1986-1997, document an independent socialist organization founded in 1986, dedicated to a regrouping of the U.S. socialist left. Solidarity's aims are to organize the unorganized, develop ties between movements, strengthen rank-and-file democracy and build international worker-to-worker links. To accomplish these aims they have supported: labor unions against corporations and “business unionism”; the peoples of many countries, particularly Central America, Indonesia and Palestine, against U.S. aggression and imperialism; reproductive rights and other feminist interests; an ecologically balanced society; and gay rights. They oppose the mainstream political parties and promote the idea of an independent political party whose agenda is determined by its members. The collection documents YSA's role in the protest against the Vietnam War, in various struggles for minority rights, and in numerous other political and social conflicts dating from the 1960s through the 1980s.
  On microfilm are National Executive Committee minutes, mailings, financial reports, mimeographed materials produced by the national office for intra-party communication, historical files, and detailed narrative reports on local activities during the 1970s. Subject files relate to involvement with the international student movement during the 1980s, and especially with the movement in South Africa; the domestic student movement of the 1970s; trials of several expelled dissidents; conferences and defense cases; and correspondence about diverse organizations such as Prisoners United and the Symbionese Liberation Army. Predating the YSA are bulletins and minutes of the National Action Committee of the Young Socialist League and minutes of the editorial board and mailings of the Young Socialist. Also included is a print of To Make a Revolution, a film by David Weiss concerning the YSA during the early 1970s. A few items, 1965-1971, are available in paper form.
