Hagar Family
Correspondence, 1840–80, 1 ft. Includes letters of Sarah G. Hagar (1827–1908), a governess, to her sister Kate. Sarah spent 12 years in Europe with the family of General Berdan, during which time she went to Russia. The relevant items were written from St. Petersburg in 1870–72. Unpublished inventory (NUCMC 74–1103).
John Spargo (1876-1966)
Papers, 1890–1966, 21 boxes. Socialist before World War I. He wrote articles, essays, reviews, and letters about Russia, 1900–40. Among his 22 Russian correspondents were Gregor Alexinsky, Ekaterina Breshkovsky, A. Kalpaschnikoff, Marie Pechkoff, V. Tchertkoff (Chertkov), and V. Verestchagin (Vereshchagin), the artist. Concerning Russia Spargo corresponded with, among 14 persons, William H. Taft, Elihu Root, and Henry Cabot Lodge. Most of the correspondence is from 1900–20, but some Russia-related letters come from the 1930s. Unpublished list of correspondents and inventory of titles of his writings.
Warren R. Austin (1877-1962)
Papers, 1877–1962, 101 ft. Lawyer and senator, and the first U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, through 1952. He also helped to prepare the Lend-Lease Act, 1939–42, was in on the establishment of NATO, and became involved in other major U.S. foreign policy questions. Materials Austin collected while at the UN, 1949–52, include mostly printed matter (mimeo handouts, press releases, State Department memos and notes). Among the correspondence, speeches, writings, notebooks, and other materials are items on his career, Bretton Woods, Dumbarton Oaks, the Korean War, and similar matters. There are memoranda of conversations with Secretary of State James F. Byrnes also. The collection is inventoried by folder but not in detail for folder contents. (NUCMC 71–1923)
Wilbur Collection
The Wilbur Collection also includes the papers of 2 long-time U.S. senators from Vermont, George D. Aiken (b. 1892) and Winston L. Prouty (1906–1971). These collections most probably contain some pertinent materials.
