Papers, 1915–69, 150 items. Humanitarian, reformer, journalist, and traveler. He was Socialist Party candidate for governor of Texas in 1936. The collection, in positive photocopies, consists of correspondence, articles, a scrapbook, biography, and typed transcript of a taped interview, 1967. Among the letters are 41 written on 2 trips to the Soviet Union, in 1925 and 1967. Brannin describes and analyzes living conditions, the political situation, and other matters. In the interview Brannin discusses, among other things, the Texas Socialist Party. Unpublished finding aids (NUCMC 73–875).
Dott E. Smith (1904-1971)
Papers, 1944–46, 3 ft. Colonel in the United States Army. Commanded the largest prisoner of war compound in the United States from May 1944 through June 1946, during which time all German/Russian prisoners of war were repatriated through this camp. These prisoners were largely Russian soldiers captured by Germans and forced into German service. The records consist of transcripts of telephone conversations, and conferences, special orders, reports, statistics, and photographs relating to the prisoner of war camp and the repatriation of the Russian/German soldiers.
