• A.T. Bel'chinko (d. 1953) Collection

  ca. 1890s-1940s, 6 ft. Diplomat. Bel'chinko was Russian consul-general in Hankow, China, until 1917, then honorary Portuguese consul (ca. 1918–43). He emigrated to the U.S. ca. 1944. Business and personal correspondence and reports pertain largely to his consular activities; also, diary and memoir material on life in St. Petersburg at the turn of this century. Some reports, in English and French, detail local conditions and the Japanese military occupation of Hankow in the late 1930s. As leader of Russian Emigrants Association, Bel'chinko collected biographical information (ca. 1,000 registration sheets plus photographs) for Russian emigre citizens of Hankow.

  Lawyer and teacher. Correspondence and papers relating to his career in Manchuria, Harbin, and Shanghai; items on Soviet-Chinese diplomacy, liquidation of the Russo-Asiatic Bank in Harbin, 1926, banking, and trade.

• Aleksandr S. Orlov (b. ca. 1888)

  Lawyer and actor. Graduated Moscow University in 1913; emigrated to Harbin in 1931; actor in Shanghai, 1941–49; lecturer in China and the U.S. Manv photos and some letters about his career, 1913–1960s. His book The Dust of Backstage appeared in 1934.

  Assistant procurator in the Tiflis Superior Court, 1908–18. Personal documents, typed manuscripts, and printed matter. Three typescripts relate to the Rojdestvensky family and to Alexander Nikolaevich's career: "Memoirs of an Assistant District Attorney of the Tiflis Superior Court, 1908–1918," 200 pp.; "Family Chronicle, 1882–1918," 200 pp.; and "Abroad: France (Toulouse, Algiers, and Paris), 1920–1940," 200 pp. A typescript, 50 pp., concerns the conquest and colonization of the Caucasus.   Imperial army general, chief of staff of the Irkutsk military region in 1919, and journalist. Emigrated to Harbin in 1920. Papers on his career as a journalist and the emigration, 1937–55.

• B. N. Kompaneiskii (1885-1965)

  Papers, 1 box, ca. 1,000 pp. Professor and author. Born in St. Petersburg, he went to Berlin in 1942, to Argentina in 1948, where he died. Taught psycho-physiological sciences at the Universidad Nacional de la Plata in Argentina, wrote works on the physiology of color and also plays, stories, novels, and fairy tales under the pseudonym N. Kovaleriskii. Unpublished typescripts (carbon copies), in Russian, of many of his writings. Unpublished finding aid.

  Correspondence, reports, and printed matter concerning Russian scouts/ explorers (razvedchiki) in Shanghai, China, and the Tubabao (Philippines) refugee camp, 1937–50; also, notes on Russian history (Catherine II and G. Potemkin) and maps of Russia.

• Boris Nikolaevich Volkov (b. 1894)

  Official, author, and poet. Literary manuscripts, voluminous correspondence, and some poetry. Born in Ekaterinoslav, Volkov was a student on the jurisprudence faculty of Moscow University 1912–15. He was in the stretcherbearer corps during World War I, Sympathetic to the Provisional Government, he fled Irkutsk in 1917 through Mongolia to China, 1921. ("Ripley's Believe It or Not" reports that he covered 1,200 miles on foot in just 5 days and 10 hours.) Volkov emigrated to the U.S. in 1923. An unpublished autobiographical novel, "Conscript to Paradise," written in the 1930s, records his experiences in 1914–23: participation in the Siberian Civil War, investigation of the Pan-Mongolian movement for anti-Bolshevik forces, employment in Mongolia by the ministries of finance and interior of Baron R. F. Ungern-Sternberg's government, and work for the import-export firm the Gilchrist Company in Kalgan and Ulan Bator (Urga). There are English and Russian versions of this novel. Also, his unpublished work "Na chuzhaia berega" and some poetry from 1913. Much of the correspondence is with his publishers and translator. Other correspondents include General Dmitrii L. Khorvat and A. Serebrennikov.

L. Obolenskii, Metropolitan Antonii, and generals A. P. Kuteopov and P. N. Krasnov.

• Dmitrii L. Khorvat

  Collection, 1899–1921, ca. 2,000 items, ca. 8,000 pp. Army officer (lieutenant-general), director of the Chinese Eastern Railway, ca. 1917, and a "supreme plenipotentiary" of the Omsk Provisional Government for the Far East in the Civil War. He was also a member of the Allied Control Commission, which dealt with the Chinese Eastern Railway in the Civil War, Business and personal correspondence, reports, office files, diaries, intelligence reports, and bulletins of the American Expeditionary Forces on Siberia and European Russia, telegrams, and diplomatic reports, mostly in Russian (many English and/or French translations). Covers the Siberian Civil War and Allied intervention there, the Chinese Eastern Railway, and major events in the Far East. Correspondents include Derber, prime minister in the Siberian government; Cossack Ataman G. M. Semenov; the Harbin consul-general M. K. Popov; and the ambassadors Boris Bakhmet'ev (Washington), V. A substantial part of the collection consists of individual service records, ca, 100 11. There is also a handwritten daily log (Dnevnik) of a Cossack troop elder who accompanied an Imperial Russian mission to Peking in 1831, ca. 100 pp.

• Grand Duchess Maria Aleksandrovna

  520 letters, 1870–88. Daughter of Alexander II and wife of the duke of Edinburgh. Correspondence mostly with her father and mother, particularly the latter, mainly on family matters. Includes some letters of her parents to her. Letters are legible and in fair condition but unsorted. Permission required from the museum president and curator. The letters are stored in a bank vault.

• Iosif Konstantinovich Okulich (1871-1948)

  Papers, 1917-?, ca. 6 ft. Member of the Soviet of Trade and Industry, July 1917, participant in the Union of Siberian Creamery Associations, 1918, and representative plenipotentiary in the U.S. for the Priamurskoe pravitel'stvo of Siberia, 1921–22. Most of the material concerns his activity on behalf of anti-Bolshevik groups, including his efforts in 1918 to enlist British support for Admiral A. V. Kolchak and the Priamur government. Many letters between Okulich and the British Foreign Office deal with the Allied intervention in Siberia and at Murmansk and the need of icebreakers for Vladivostok. Personalities mentioned include U.S. Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes (letter to him about Japan's seizure of former Russian territory in 1921); Maurice Paleologue, last French ambassador to Imperial Russia; Eduard Benes, an autograph; and the emigres Pavel Genzel' (Haentsel or Haensel) and I. P. Tolmachoff.

  Papers, 4 boxes. Author, inventor, and editor of the periodical Zhar-ptitsa (1948–57). Correspondence (personal and "to-the-editor"), typescript novels (e.g., "Beregites1," ca. 250 pp., written 1944–46), essays, other writings, (e.g., "Skitaniia po Evrope," 326 pp., handwritten), blueprints, and other materials for his inventions, principally electrical conductors. Also, his personal library.

• Ivan V. Emil'ianov

  Economist, political leader, and professor. Born in Tobolsk, Siberia, he became chief economist for and later president of the Provisional Government bank in Kharkov, then head of the city's government in 1919. On emigrating he became director of Selskosoiuz in London, 1920–21, the purchasing arm for some 20,000 Russian cooperative associations. Emil'ianov was an economics professor at Prague University before coming to the U.S. in 1927. He taught economics at Rutgers University. Author of 42 monographs and ca. 1,000 articles on cooperatives, agriculture, and industry. His papers cover most aspects of his career in Russia and abroad. Personal and professional correspondence, photographs, typed and handwritten manuscripts of his works, documents, and printed matter. Includes bulletins of Selskosoiuz and his correspondence for 1920–21; reports from 2 agencies he was apparently connected with in the 1920s-1930s—the All-Russian Red Cross based in Paris, and the Commission pour la Reconstitution de 1'Industrie Miniere et Metallurgique de la Russie Meridionelle.

• Olga Alexandrovna Morozova

  Collection of biographies of prominent emigres that she prepared in the 1930s-1940s, handwritten, 400 pp.; and a typescript, 284 pp., entitled "Tubabao, The Camp of IRO for Russian White Emigrants from China" (IRO = International Relief Organization), written 1949–51. The primary focus in the biographies is the life of emigrants in the Far East, where Morozova herself was a civic leader, writer, and amateur historian.

Emigrating to the U.S. in 1929, Haentsel [Haensel] taught at the University of Chicago and then, from 1930, at Northwestern Universitv. Letters, lecture notes, and printed matter. Otryvki vospominanii (Kiev, 1943), published under German rule, with his handwritten revisions and foreword for a second edition, 244 pp. "Chto proshlo—togo ne budet—kartinki minuvshego. 1878–1917 gg.," handwritten, 100 pp., describes his early years.
