The library of the Arboretum has 4 packages of materials sent to the United States in 1841 by Dr. F. E. L. Fischer, director of the St. Petersburg Imperial Botanical Gardens. The materials were intended for Dr. William Darlington of West Chester (Pennsylvania); Dr. John Torrey of New York; the Massachusetts Historical Society; and the Boston Society of Natural History. The packages, which include letters, seed samples, and pamphlets on botany and zoology, were carried to the U.S. by William Chew, secretary to the United States legation at St. Petersburg. For a fuller description of this material, see the article on which this entry is based, Hui-Lin Li and Ann F. Stanley, "Russo-United States Botanical Exchange of 1841," The Morris Arboretum Bulletin, Volume 26, no. 4 (December 1975), pp. 51–56.
