Ca. 800 letters, mostly 1924–45. Correspondence of the artists Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, and Alexei Jawlensky with Galka Scheyer. Jawlensky was born near Torzhok in 1864, traveled frequently to Western Europe, and emigrated in 1914. Kandinsky, born in Moscow (1866), was also in the West often, finally leaving the Soviet Union in 1921. Letters not in English have all been translated. Due to their fragile condition, the originals are kept in a vault; only photocopies are available for researchers. Open to scholars by appointment only. There is a list of the Jawlensky letters, arranged by date of composition. (NUCMC 65–2000) All of the letters will eventually be available on microfilm at the Archives of American Art.
