• [Olga Konstantinovna]

  A calendar of selections from the works of Mikhail Lermontov used as a memory book, with manuscript inscriptions throughout, compiled by Olga Konstantinovna, granddaughter of Paul I. The book, Izo dnia v den', izvlecheniia iz sochinenii Lermontova na kazhdyi den' goda ([n.p.], 1886), is bound in black morocco with a heavy silver crown and the initials OK affixed to the cover.   "The yellow count, with the Japanese check of 138 million yen... [New York, 1935]." Typescript with some holograph corrections, unpublished; an account of a swindle based on fraudulent papers from the Russo-Japanese War.

• Armenian Manuscripts

  Minasian, Heghen, and Khantamour Collections, 14th–20th c, ca. 7 ft., 80 vols., 100 items, and 11 albums. Includes Bibles, commentaries on Biblical texts, ritualistic texts (ritual books, menologies, lectionaries, sermons, psalters, calendars of feasts, books of hours), poetry texts (e.g., canticles), medical and pharmacological books, works on logic and rhetoric, a dream book, works on astronomy, and miscellanies, 14th–18th c.; business and personal correspondence, account books, local histories, historical and semi-autobiographical novels, music, folklore, dictionaries, plant lore, medical works, commentaries on Biblical texts, and statistical information (particularly on Armenian communities in India), 19th–20th c, ca. 100 manuscripts and typescripts, partly in English; personal journals, short stories, scholarly works, correspondence, business papers, government edicts, and encyclicals, in Armenian and English, relating to the life of Armenian communities in Iran, India, and California, ca. 7 ft.; and 11 albums of photographs plus 80 loose photos of individuals and families, groups, historical monuments, etc., mostly 20th c, taken in Iran, California, Turkey, Greece, and other locations. • Cornelius Cole and the Cole Family

  Papers, 1833–1943, 57 boxes. 2 folders in separate boxes contain personal correspondence regarding the Russian-American Fur Company and Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Baron Edouard de Stoeckel, in 1855–66. References are in Elmo R. Richardson's The Papers of Cornelius Cole and the Cole Family, 1833–1943. A Guide to Collection 217 (UCLA Library Occasional Papers, no. 4, 1956).

• Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966)

  Papers, ca. 1883–1966, 25 boxes and 20 oversize packages. English stage designer and producer, son of Ellen Terry. Manuscripts, correspondence, ephemera, photographs, original drawings, and prints. In 1908 and succeeding years Craig was involved in designing the production of Hamlet presented at the Moscow Art Theatre, December 1911-January 1912. Among 32 letters from Craig to Ellen Terry in 1908–11, some concern the production of the Moscow Hamlet (box 8, folders 10–12). Box 11, folder 4 contains photographs of model stages and figures for Hamlet, ca. 1909 and 1913, 1 with holograph notes; and folder 13 (same box) holds 5 photos of production designs for Hamlet, 1908–11. There are 23 cut-out, one-dimensional cardboard figures of varying size for the model stage used in the Moscow Art Theatre production of Hamlet, 1909–11, colored with charcoal, crayon, and watercolor (box 13, folders 1–22, and oversize item "K"); and 5 more similar figures of wood, colored with paint and charcoal, variants of the cardboard figures, used for mock-up of the MAT production (box 13, folders 23–27). In box 14 are original prints (inked) of black figures Craig developed from the wood and cardboard silhouettes used in his model stage to illustrate scenes he envisioned for the MAT production of Hamlet; the one-dimensional figures were inked in black and pressed on thin paper or cloth, 12 items, 1907–1908. Box 10 (folder 6) has press clippings and advertising material relating to Craig's earlier work and current designs for the Hamlet production of December 1911-January 1912, 10 clippings, in Russian, 1911–12, and 20 postcards with photographs of the actors in the Moscow production, taken by K. A. Fetser, Moscow, 1912. Finally, there are 3 catalogs of exhibitions of drawings and models for Hamlet and other plays by Craig, 1912–13, in London, Manchester, and Leeds. Unpublished register.

  Papers, ca. 1887–1959, 6 boxes. Activist. Correspondence, diaries, speeches, essays, photographs, and miscellaneous manuscripts concerning women's rights, prison reform, her visits to the Soviet Union, and other matters. Unpublished register.

• George Hoyningen-Huene (b. 1900)

  Russian-born American photographer. Transcript of an interview completed under the auspices of the UCLA Oral History Program. Recollections of the Russian Revolution, 1917–21, his career as a fashion and motion picture photographer, and his photographic studies of various countries.

• Maria Ouspenskaya (1876-1949)

  Papers, ca. 1922–42, 4 boxes and 1 package. Russian-American actress. Materials for publicity, motion picture scripts, notices, photographs, and reviews. Unpublished register.

• Richard Cobden (1804-1865)

  Papers, ca. 1833–65, 225 items. British political economist, statesman, and reformer. While traveling in the Russian Empire in 1847, Cobden wrote letters home to his family (brothers, sisters, and wife). The letters, August-September 1847, came from St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Konigsberg (present Kaliningrad). Unpublished register.

• Roger Mennevee (b. 1885)

  Collection, ca. 1910–65, ca. 1,200 ft. French editor, publisher, and owner-manager of the monthly review Les Documents politiques, diplomatiques et financiers. Clippings, publications, and notes. These materials provided information for Mennevee's research and writing. They cover such subjects as the tsarist Okhrana from 1881 to the 1917 Revolution; the Cheka and other secret services plus Soviet espionage, particularly in the U.S., from 1917 to the Khrushchev years; pre-1914 Russian funds invested in the French press; emigration and emigre organizations, 1914–23; Russian debts; Bolshevik propaganda and activity between the wars; and antiBolshevism. Among people involved and noted in specific items are generals A. P. Koutiepoff, 1930, and E. K. Miller, 1937, Aleksandr Kerensky, V. M. Zenzinov, and the defector Viktor Kravchenko. • Waldemar Westergaard (1882-1963)

  Collection of typescripts, photocopies, microfilms, manuscripts, and personal correspondence; 217 boxes. UCLA professor of history. Materials concern Russo-Danish relations, 1513–1726; Sweden and Russia in the sixteenth century; Livonian affairs, 1523–57; and the Triple Alliance of 1668–72. Much of the material consists of copies of documents in various repositories in the Baltic states and in western Europe. Unpublished register. (NUCMC 61–1060)
