• Allen Wardwell

  Papers, 1917-1941. ca. 5,000 items (10 boxes; 1 oversized folder). These papers chiefly concern the 1917-1918 American Red Cross Mission to Russia, in which Wardwell served, and his involvement in efforts to support trade with and aid to Russia in 1919-1924; he was chairman of the Russian Famine Fund in that period. There are a few items concerning the 1941 W.A. Harriman-Lord Beaverbrook mission to Russia, in which Wardwell participated. Materials on the Red Cross Mission are chiefly from May-October 1918, when Wardwell commanded it; they consist of correspondence, reports, documents, many photographs, and transcribed excerpts from Wardwell's diary and letters home. Major correspondents include Georgiĭ Chicherin, Lev Trotskiĭ, and Raymond Robins. Records of Wardwell's efforts in regard to Russia in 1919-1924 consist of extensive correspondence files with prominent Americans, such as Robins and Herbert Hoover, manuscripts, related printed materials, and Wardwell's diary of his trip to Russia in the fall of 1922. • American Institute of Pacific Relations (1927-62)

  Office files, ca. 235,000 items. Primary concerns of the American branch and its international counterpart were the political, economic, and social problems of eastern and southern Asia and the South Pacific, and problems of American foreign policy. The institutes held international conferences, conducted research programs, and published works on these topics. Contains travel letters and reports on conditions in Russia and other countries, 1933–54. (NUCMC 64–1331)

• Armenian Manuscripts (Smith Collection, Plimpton Collection, and separate holdings)

  The Smith Collection holds 2 leaves from a Gospel of John, ca. 12th c. (MS. Armen. [frag.] 1) and a miscellany from 1584 and later (MS. Armen. 5). The Plimpton Collection contains a hymnal of 1659 (MS. Armen. 2), four Gospels, 17th c. (MS. Armen. 3), and a phylactery from 1636 (MS. Armen. 4). Separate holdings include a manuscript copy of the ritual of the Armenian church, 1628 (X892.9 Ar 5Q), theological lectures, n.d. (X892.9 L49), and an undated hymnal (X892.9 N35).

• Balanchine, George; Otto H. Kahn Papers (undated).

  The Otto H. Kahn Papers consists primarily of the correspondence of Otto H. Kahn (1867-1934), international banker, philanthropist, and patron of the arts and music, but also includes printed copies of addresses, talks, opinions, and speeches that Kahn gave on a variety of political and fiscal topics, as well as press clippings, letterbooks, and some photographs. The papers include correspondence with George Balanchine, the Russian-born choreographer and co-founder of the New York City Ballet.
  
  

• Boris Michael Stanfield (b. 1889)

  Papers, 1937–57, ca. 4 of 14 boxes, ca. 3,500 items. Columbia economics professor. Mimeographed material, clippings, and periodicals concerning economics, the labor movement, and the USSR (arranged by subject). (NUCMC 69–641)

• Boris Nikolaevich Ermolov Collection (1916-1923)

  ca. 125 items (1 box). Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, a subject file, and printed materials collected by Ermolov. The collection almost exclusively concerns the 1917 Revolution and the Civil War. Correspondence includes items by Isabel Hapgood and Konstantin Nabokov. The manuscripts include English-language translations of Russian materials from the period. There are 2 photographs: 1 of Grigoriĭ Rasputin at a tea party in 1916, and the other of the State Duma in 1917. The subject file concerns the Orthodox Patriarch Tikhon in 1917-19. Printed materials include Russian, English, and American clippings, pamphlets, journals, posters, and fliers. • Carl Remington (1879-1919)

  Papers, 1899–1905, ca. 100 items. Secretary to the American governor-general of the Philippines. Diaries, scrapbooks, letters, speeches, and reports (the last 2 in copies). Remington was involved in preparations for the arrival of Russian warships in Manila harbor after the battle of Tsushima Straits in 1905. Materials pertain to this event and to the Russo-Japanese War in general. (NUCMC 71–996)

• Chan-han Wu (fl. 1920s)

  Correspondence, 1923–29, 28 items. Chinese student in Germany and USSR in the 1920s, member of the Chinese Communist Party, and Trotskyite. Letters written to his brother Chao Fa Wu. He apparently joined the Chinese Communist Party while in Germany and went to Moscow to study at the Sun Yat-sen University. Letters describe Chinese student life in Moscow during the revolutionary fervor of 1926–29. Also, letters from Wu's companion, Irene Petrashevskaya, in Moscow to Chao Fa Wu, 6 ALS, 1 TLS, 1927–28.

  Papers, ca. 1100–1939, ca. 40,000 items. Mathematics professor. Collected materials about mathematics and science. Many letters from Russian/Soviet scientists concern the history of science and other subjects. (NUCMC 62–4927)

• David J. Dallin Manuscripts (1947-1951)

  20 items (1 box). Manuscripts collected by David J. Dallin. These manuscripts are divided into two parts. The first consists of 15 autobiographical essays (8 in English, 7 in Russian) by Soviet displaced persons, discussing their lives in the USSR and why they chose not to return there. The second part consists of 5 essays in English telling the stories of Soviet displaced persons from the point of view of another, unidentified narrator.   Papers, ca. 1890–1937, ca. 80,000 items. American financier. Information on American-Soviet economic relations in the early post-revolutionary years.

• George Vernadsky

  Papers, (16th-20th centuries). ca. 80,000 items (234 boxes; 4 oversized folders; 1 box glass negatives). Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files, printed materials, and memorabilia of Vernadsky. Most of the collection consists of his personal and professional papers, ca. 1918-1973. Sizable groups of materials also concern members of his family, especially his wife Nina; his father, scientist Vladimir I. Vernadskiĭ; his mother, Nataliia Vernadskaia; and his sister Nina V. Toll. There are also included a large number of letters by various persons written to the Vernadskiĭ's in 1888-1896 and in the 1920s and 1930s when they made visits to Europe. A number of files concern George Vernadsky's professional contacts with journals, conferences, organizations, and publishers, in the fields of Russian, Byzantine, and Asian history. Although the manuscripts consist chiefly of George Vernadsky's articles, lectures, essays, books, and notes, there are also items by others. Photographs are chiefly of George and Nina Vernadsky and their friends and relations. Subject files deal primarily with George Vernadsky's professional activities in Europe and America (for instance, "Eurasianism," the Kondakov Institute in Prague, Yale University, and various conferences and associations), and with his parents, other relatives, and many other aspects of his life and career. In addition, there are several boxes of records, primarily 16th and 17th century "stolbsty," relating to the history of the Tambov-penza region of Russia; these appear in the collection as "Akty Tambovsko-Penzenskogo kraia" Besides many boxes of offprints, journals, clippings, and pamphlets on scholarly topics which George Vernadsky collected, printed items mostly concern his and his father's activities. • Geroid Tanqueray Robinson (1892-1971)

  Papers, 1915–65, 25,575 items. Professor of history and founder of the Russian Institute at Columbia. Letters, lecture notes, and other writings for the major phases of his career. Drafts and proofs of his Rural Russia Under the Old Regime (1932). He participated in the Council on Foreign Relations, the Arden Conference, and the Research Program on the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. A letter from Popov in the Ministry of Agriculture, census division, concerns peasant resistance to a census of agricultural supplies, 14 August 1917. (NUCMC 73–99)

• Graham Romeyn Taylor Papers (1918-1919)

  ca. 250 items (2 boxes; 1 oversized folder).Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials of Taylor. The collection concerns his service in the American Committee on Public Information Press Bureau in Vladivostok, from the end of 1918 to March 1919. Included are carbons of outgoing correspondence; a report by Malcolm Davis on public opinion in the Zabaĭkal region; press releases and translations by the Committee; and newspaper summaries prepared by the Intelligence Section of the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia. There are American publicity photographs, including New York scenes. Printed materials of the Committee consist of all 14 issues of its "Druzheskoe Slovo" (Dec. 1918-March 1919), and several pamphlets. Also in the collection are two issues of Russian newspapers: "Voennye Vedomosti" (Novonikolaevsk) and "Ekho" (Vladivostok). • Hungarian Refugee Project Records (1957-1959)

  686 items (28 boxes). Columbia University's Research Project on Hungary, which was carried out in the late 1950s. This project involved the interviewing of people who left Hungary during the 1956 uprising. The collection consists of transcripts of the 401 interviews which were done. There is one complete bound set, and one set of loose interviews, nos. 100-626. Most of the interviews cover the following topics: the revolt of 1956, personal life, work experience, economic conditions, social problems, education, friends and family, government, party, police, army, communications, ideology, attitudes, and opinions. There are also a few more unstructured interviews defined as "open ended conversations , largely with expert informants," covering topics such as those above but also including religious affairs, the intelligentsia, and Hungary and the Soviet Union. • James Shotwell (1874-1965)

  Papers, 1914–30, ca. 60,000 items. American historian. Individual Russian-related items not ascertained. Correspondence and documents concern the Paris Peace Conference, League of Nations, Locarno Pact, International Labor Organization, and other topics. Shotwell edited the Economic and Social History of the World War, 150 vols. 1919–29, which included several important books on Russia.

• John Milton (1608-1674)

  Letterbook, 1649–59, 1 vol. English poet and secretary to Oliver Cromwell. Copies (in a secretary's hand) of 156 letters written by Milton when he was Cromwell's secretary. All but 10 are in Latin, arranged by the name of the recipient. [Letter] 98 is "Instructions for ye Agent to ye Great Duke of Muscovy" (1657) and no. 99 is "Imp[er]atori Duciq[ue] magno Russiae" (To the emperor and grand duke of Russia, i.e., the tsar), ca. 1657. The tsar and grand duke would be Aleksei Mikhailovich. (NUCMC 61–3350)

• John N. Hazard

  Papers, ca. 1880-1973. 101 boxes. The papers are divided into several parts. The first part of the collection consists of Hazard's class notes from when he was a student at Moscow Juridical Institute in the 1930s. The second part consists of materials relating to the lend-lease program to the USSR during World War II. These materials include carbon copies of outgoing correspondence (1943-1946), and of office day journals (1941-1946); reports on the progress of aid to the USSR (1941-1944); and an FEA report entitled "German Administration in the Baltic Area" (1943). The collection also includes correspondence, manuscripts, documents and printed materials dealing with Vice-President Henry Wallace's trip to the USSR in 1944; a microfilm copy of "Ustav Moskovskogo Gosudarstvennogo Universiteta" (1939); manuscripts of translations done for "A Source Book for Russian History from Early Times to 1917" (New Haven, 1972), George Vernadsky, senior editor; and three pamphlets from the series, "Biblioteka narodnogo sudi i narodnogo zasedatelia" (Moscow, 1939). There are also Imperial Russian government bonds from 1914 and 1916, and election ballots with instructions to voters for November 1917 elections for the Constituent Assembly in Petrograd. • Joseph Schillinger

  Papers, 1918-1943. 1 box. Papers and memorabilia of Schillinger, including a group of rare Russian concert posters, programs, music compositions, published writings about Schillinger, and a notebook containing the outlines of courses and lectures given in Russia and in New York. • Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoi [Tolstoy] (1828-1910)

  Correspondence, 1897–1937, 124 letters. Russian writer and religious philosopher. Letters from Tolstoi [Tolstoy] and members of his family to Aylmer Maude, the English translator of his works. They concern [Tolstoy] Tolstoi's health, art, censorship, John Ruskin, the "Resurrection" fund, the Dukhobors' banishment to Siberia, Jewish pogroms, Dmitrii Merezhkovsky, peasant misery, famine, the assassination of Alexander II, the doctrine of non-resistance to evil, and Tolstoi's attitudes toward slander and stimulants. Among the correspondents, besides Tolstoi himself (69 letters), are Maria Tolstaia [Tolstaya] Obolenskaia (6), Alexandra Tolstaia [Tolstaya] (3), Olga Tolstaia [Tolstaya] (5), Sergius Tolstoi [Tolstoy(11), Tatiana Tolstaia [Tolstaya] (11), and Mrs. V. • Lincoln Steffens (1866-1936)

  Papers, over 50 boxes. Author and editor. Scrapbook of his 1916–17 lecture tour speaking on Russia contains letters and clippings. Correspondence files, manuscripts, and scrapbooks are available on microfilm for interlibrary loan. (NUCMC 61–3444)

• Louis Cowan Collection (1941-45)

  45 items. Collection of Soviet World War II posters. Colorful propaganda works produced by such artists as Mikhail Cheremnykh for TASS, the Soviet Telegraph Agency. An artist collective would receive war news from TASS, quickly give it a graphic interpretation (usually within 24 hours), and hang the results in display windows of stores. The TASS Windows Collective in Moscow produced a total of 1,250 posters. There is a published brochure describing these posters, exhibited at Columbia's Russian Institute in December 1976, with commentary by Elizabeth Kridl Valkenier.

• Lydia Holubnychny (1929-1975)

  Papers, ca. 1923–75, ca. 4,000 items. Sino-Soviet scholar, Include research materials for her dissertation; 5 boxes of Russian and miscellaneous files; a name file index, A-Z, 7 boxes; notes on China, 2 boxes; 2 boxes of bibliography cards; and a box of annotated books.

• Malcolm Waters Davis (1889-1970)

  Papers, ca. 1883–1949, ca. 400 items. Author and international affairs specialist. Correspondence and literary manuscripts. Davis lived in Russia, 1916–19. His letters from these years contain observations about the country and particularly the Revolution. He later became associated with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. (NUCMC 74–267) Note: The Manuscript Department also holds the office files of the New York and Paris branches of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, ca. 1911–54; ca. 500 vols., 124 cartons, and 900 correspondence files, among which there may well be relevant materials. Time did not permit an examination.

• Manuel Rosenberg (1897-1967)

  Drawings and sketches, ca. 1920–50, 60 of 300 drawings. Chief artist (illustrator and cartoonist) and writer for the Scripps-Howard newspapers. Visited the Soviet Union in 1929 together with other journalists, producing 60 sheets of drawings on the trip. In his file of sketches and caricatures is one of Feodor Chaliapin.

• Mark Aleksandrovich Aldanov

  Papers, 1926-1957. ca. 6,700 items (37 boxes). The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, a photograph, and printed material, primarily from the period 1941-1957. Included are letters from Ivan Bunin, Marc Chagall, Mikhail Karpovich, Vasiliĭ Maklakov, W. Somerset Maugham, Vladimir Nabokov, Ilia Repin, Edmund Wilson, Boris Zaĭtsev and many others. Manuscripts of his works include "Istoki", "Nachalo kontsa", "Zhivi, kak khochesh"́, and "The Escape" (English translation of "Begstvo"), such shorter tales as "Noch ́v terminale", "Povest ́o smerti", and "Ulḿskaia noch"́, as well as numerous articles, book reviews and essays. There are financial records for "Novyĭ Zhurnal", which Aldanov helped found, and the clippings are mainly articles about Aldanov. There is one late photograph of Aldanov. • Max Matthasia Laserson (1887-1951)

  Papers, 1932–46, ca. 1,000 items. Lecturer in legal and political philosophy at Columbia. Correspondence, notes, and drafts relate to his published works on international law and politics, especially of Russia. (NUCMC 66–1592)

• Max Rabinoff (1877-1966)

  Papers, 1908–61, 975 items. Economist and musical impresario. Rabinoff was economic adviser to Estonia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. He helped develop the Export-Import Bank and promoted trade with Russia. He was connected with the Ballet Russe in 1909–11. The correspondence, printed matter, photos, and oral history interview (transcript, 48 pp.) concern all phases of his life, but especially his introduction of Russian ballet to the U.S. in 1909–11 and the famous ballerina Anna Pavlova. • Michael T. Florinsky

  Papers, 1914-1918. ca. 3,100 items (12 boxes). These papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, and printed materials. Most of the correspondence concerns Florinsky's publications and editorial work. Among the correspondents are Boris Bakhmeteff, Michael Karpovich, Aleksandr Meyendorff, Bernard Pares, James T. Shotwell, and Dmitriĭ Sviatopolk-Mirskiĭ: there are one or two items each from John Dewey, Herbert Hoover, Edwin Seligman, and Harry S. Truman. Manuscripts by Florinsky include his "Russia: A Short History," and some minor articles and book reviews. Other manuscripts include a poem by Bernard Pares and a study by Sergeĭ Prokopovich of the Soviet five-year plan of 1946-50; there is also a photograph of Meyendorff. Documents concern Florinsky's career at Columbia and also include book contracts. Printed materials consist chiefly of reviews of his works and reviews he wrote of others' books. Biographical note: Columbia M.A. 1927, Ph.D. 1931. Florinsky taught economic history at Columbia from 1931-1963. Among his major works were "Russia: A History and an Interpretation" and "Integrated Europe?" • Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841)

  Collection of 3 albums containing poetry and drawings, many by the poet Lermontov. Such albums were kept at home so that friends could record their sentiments. Known as the "Vereshchagina Albums," only 2 actually belonged to the Vereshchagin family, which was distantly related to the Lermontovs. The third belonged to Varvara Lopukhina, a cousin of the Vereshchagins and an early sweetheart of Lermontov. Album I, 1808–22, belonged to Elizaveta Arkadievna Annenkova-Vereshchagina. It contains poems by Russian and French poets. Some of the verses by Russian poets are copies; others are autographs. Many poems have pencilled annotations identifying their writers (added later and not to be trusted). Besides verses this album contains many drawings (none of Lermontov). Other poets whose works are identified: N. Vakhrameev, Ivan Dmitriev, Davidov, A. Guselnikov, V. A. Zhukovskii, Popov, Vasilii Kapnist, Princess Nadezhda Pokhuznina, and S. Martinoff. Album II, 1831–33, belonged to Elizaveta's daughter, Alexandra [Alexandrina] Vereshchagina von Hiigel (Baroness Karl), 1810–1873, who moved in the same literary circles as her cousin Lermontov. Contains Russian and French poems, also some English poetry, reflecting Russian interest in Lord Byron and Thomas Moore. 1 poem has been identified as Lermontov's and there are 9 drawings by him. Other poets: Prince Alexei, Khovansky, A. S. Pushkin, E. Baratynsky, Offrosimoff, I. Kozlov, A. Bystren, Karlhof, and Glebov. Album III, 1825–40, was cherished by Lermontov's former sweetheart, Varvara Lopukhina, long after her marriage to Nikolai Bakhmetev, who never lost his jealousy of Lermontov. Her cousin Alexandrina eventually gained possession of this album. It contains no verses, only watercolors, ink and pencil drawings, all by Lermontov. A microfilm copy has been made; only with permission of the librarian for rare books and manuscripts can the microfilm (not the originals!) be used. • Mildred Harford Correspondence with Lana Peters (Svetlana Alliluyeva)

  1973-2007. 0.1 Linear feet. This collection contains letters, cards, photographs and clippings from Lana Peters (Svetlana Alliluyeva) to her friend Mildred Harford. After defecting from the Soviet Union, Peters lived a transitory life in the United States, at one point denouncing the west and returning to the USSR, and eventually retunring to the United States, where she died in 2011. • Nicolai T. Berezowsky (1893-1954)

  Papers, 1900–53, 9 boxes, ca. 1,250 letters and 15 vols. Violinist and conductor. Correspondence with Serge Koussevitsky (22 letters), Nicolai Lopatnikoff (72), Vladimir Golschmann, Alexander Gretchaninoff, Artur Rodzinski, Leopold and Olga Samaroff Stokowski, Paul Nordoff, and others. • Paul B. Anderson Collection (ca. 1920-1975)

  8 items (1 box). Photographs and a privately published memoir collected by Anderson. Included are seven albums with photographs, taken by Charles Riley, from the YMCA mission in Siberia in 1920; and a privately published memoir, "Shifting Scenes in Siberia," by Gail Berg Reitzel, discussing her experiences with the YMCA in Siberia in 1919-20. Riley's albums specifically concern: the Czech legion, 1920; and YMCA service in Manchuria, Vladivostok, and Tomsk, 1920. • Petr L'vovich Bark

  Papers, (1914-1937). ca. 1,000 items (4 boxes). Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, subject files, and printed materials of Bark. Cataloged materials in this collection include letters from Metropolitan Evlogiĭ, Boris Bakhmeteff, and Petr Struve, and Bark's extensive memoirs. Much of the correspondence concerns the Civil War and attempts to gain Allied support for the White forces, and also Bark's career as an English in the 1930's. Subject files concern White governments in south Russia, and Bark's life. There are also two photographs of Bark. Biographical Note: Bark entered the service of the Russian Imperial government in 1892, and in 1914-17 was the last Finance Minister of the Empire. After the 1917 revolution he lived in England, where he became managing director of the Anglo-International Bank, and was knighted in 1935. • Vladimir Nikolaevich Unkovskii

  Papers, ca. 1920-1958. 15 boxes (2,200 items). Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs and printed materials of Unkovskiĭ. The correspondence includes letters from such individuals as Emile Baës, Vladimir Burstev, Nikolaĭ Evreĭnov, Galina Kuznetsova, Boris Lazarevskiĭ, Alekseĭ Remizov, Ivan Shmelov, Boris Zaĭtsev, and Leonid Zurov. Nearly all the manuscripts are by Unkovskiĭ, and include essays, stories, and excerpts from his memoirs, many of which were published in emigre journals. There are a number of scrapbooks containing clippings of his articles. In addition, the collection contains galleys of books by Unkovskiĭ, and copies of some of his full-length works, including "Ikary" (1942) and "Andreĭ Klinskiĭ" (1940).   Working files for the book Special Envoy to Churchill and Stalin, 1941–1946 (New York: Random House, 1975) by William Averell Harriman (b. 1891) and Elie Abel (b. 1920), Columbia University's dean of journalism. Typescript drafts with handwritten corrections of Harriman's recollections; typed notes; photocopies of American, British, and Soviet (in translation) diplomatic correspondence, memoranda, and reports; speeches and other writings by Harriman; and related background materials. Arranged in numbered folders (rough chronological order), some with subject headings. Some folders are lacking. Files cover 1941–46 and 1951–54. Includes photocopies of letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Edward L. Stettinius, Harry Hopkins, Dean Acheson, Charles Bohlen, Joseph Stalin, Vyacheslav Molotov, Andrei Vyshinski, Winston Churchill, and Anthony Eden.
