• The library maintains a collection of transcripts of tape-recorded recollections of individuals significant in the history of 20th c. physics and astronomy. Among these are some that pertain to Russia/USSR:

• A. G. Massevitch (b. 1918)

  1 hr., with considerable information on his career and education at the University of Moscow through the 1940s, as well as on scientific careers in the Soviet Union.

• E. R. Mustel (b. 1911)

  References to his childhood and astronomical education in Russia.

• George Gamow (1904-1968)

  Includes ca. 20 pp. on his early life in Odessa, his work at the University of Leningrad, and his leaving Russia in 1933.

• Leon Rosenfeld (1904-1974)

  Contains passing references to Soviet nuclear physics in the 1930s.

• Lew Kowarski (b. 1907)

  Several pages concern his childhood in St. Petersburg, 1907–17.

• Stanislav Vasilevskis (b. 1907)

  Some pages on his childhood and education in Latvia; the Russian impact on Riga, 1907–44; and his departure from Latvia during World War II. The original tape recordings are preserved in the repository. Additions to the collection are expected. Unpublished finding aids (NUCMC 70–1438).
