• Educational Testing Service has been involved in educational exchanges with the Soviet Union since the late 1950s. In 1958, for example, Henry Chauncey, president of ETS from 1948 to 1970, was a member of the first official U.S. educational delegation to the USSR. Mr. Chauncey made subsequent trips to the Soviet Union in similar capacities in 1965 and 1976. His papers in the archives include dictated (typed) notes on both the 1958, 312 pp., and 1965, 236 pp., trips. The latter notes are entitled "Interviews with Soviet Educators on Recent Developments and the Current Status of Education in the U.S.S.R." Archival files for reports, photographs, tape recordings, and other materials include taped seminars by participants in the 1976 trip (recorded after their return), as well as papers prepared for a Soviet delegation that came to the U.S. in 1958, notes by Americans who have visited the Soviet Union (Alex Inkeles in 1956 and Edwin Fleishman in 1960), and translations of Soviet educational publications. Many educational officials and institutions in the USSR are mentioned in the holdings. Prominent among them is A. I. Markushevich, former deputy minister of education and vice-president of the Academy of Pedagogical Science.

  Relevant material continues to accumulate; present Soviet-related holdings total about 2 ft. Items more than 30 years old do not require permission to examine unless special restrictions apply; those less than 30 years old may be examined by permission of the archivist. There are several unpublished finding aids, including a shelf list of folder titles, a descriptive bibliography of speeches and writings by Mr. Chauncey, and an inventory.
