• Eugen Ficket (fl. 1860s)

  U.S. Army officer. Letter dated 13 October 1869 from Ficket when he was stationed at Fort Kodiak, Alaska, 11 pp. He describes a trip to the north, his experiences, the natives, and the arctic environment. Passing references to American and Russian influences.

• Francis H. Gambell (fl. ca. 1900)

  Papers, 1898–1959, 10 folders. Physician. In 1899 the U.S. sent him to give medical help to the Laplanders in Alaska, then tending reindeer newly introduced from Siberia. In 1919 he accompanied American forces to Siberia as a Red Cross physician. Diary, 1899, and reminiscences concern these experiences. (NUCMC 70–614)

• Lester Paige Breckenridge (1858-1940)

  Correspondence, 1892–1925, 45 folders. Professor of mechanical engineering. Some letters discuss the development of Russian and Chinese railways; one correspondent was Kerne Tien Yow, chief engineer for the Imperial Peking-Kalgan Railway. (NUCMC 70–1624)

• Mortimer A. Waldo (1891-1963)

  Papers, 1904–59, 1.5 cu. ft. U.S. vice-consul in Helsinki in 1918. In 1916–18 he was with the YMCA Prisoners' Aid Society in Russia. 3 journals, 1916–17, discuss the fall of the Kerensky government and the rise of the Bolsheviks. Letters to family and friends concern life in Siberia. Some correspondence (e.g., with the historian Samuel E. Morison) and an official report, 1918, detail the economic, social, political, and military situation in Finland, and Finnish, Russian, and German relations. Also, notes for talks on Russia which Waldo presented to Rotary Club meetings in 1951 and after. (NUCMC 70–682)

• Simon Cameron (1799-1889)

  Papers, 1738–1889, 22 microfilm reels. Financier, cabinet member, diplomat, and U.S. senator (Pennsylvania). Minister to Russia 1862–63. One correspondent was Charles A. Dana, the envoy to Russia. Originals are in the Library of Congress, under which entry there is more detailed information about these papers.
