• Emma Goldman (1869-1940)

  Papers, 1911–36, 1 box. Anarchist and feminist. Chiefly printed matter; also, correspondence and biographical material. (NUCMC 77–1785)

• Florence Haskell (Corliss) Lamont (1873-1952)

  Papers, ca. 1880–1968, 9 ft. Philanthropist, author, world traveler, and wife of Thomas William Lamont. Family ALS and typed letters, 1920s-1952, concern the USSR and the possible overthrow of the Bolsheviks in 1921. Also, miscellaneous speeches and pamphlets from 1946 relating to conditions in Russia and Soviet-American relations. Access restricted. (NUCMC 69–490)

• Madeleine Zabriskie Doty (1879-1963)

  Papers, 1907–62, 1 ft. Author, World War I newspaper correspondent, and social reformer. She was in Russia in 1917–18. Letters to her family describe her trip there, experiences in the revolution, and impressions of events. Also includes her press credentials in Russian from the U.S. ambassador (she represented Century Magazine and The Atlantic Monthly); a document giving her permission from the Committee of Inquiry of the Military-Revolutionary Committee to enter the Peter and Paul Fortress; and the same, to enter sessions of the Revolutionary Tribunal court and of the Constituent Assembly. There are photographs of 1917 events, such as the May 1st celebration on the Nevsky Prospect, a demonstration of soldiers' wives, mass meetings, and a soldier's funeral; and her incomplete, unpublished autobiography. A few photos are of Doty in Russia and one is of A. Kerensky. (NUCMC 67–556)

• Margery Wells Steer Papers (1950-1992)

  3 boxes (1.25 linear ft.) Journalist and pacifist. Material includes correspondence with women's historian Mary Beard, with editors of Soviet Woman journal, and with Soviet women professors. Writings include her column, Peace and the People, published books, articles for Soviet Women, and a typescript of The Weight of a Snowflake. Other correspondents include her publisher, readers, and editor, as well as William Beard and Irma Drodina, Valentina Fedetova, Nelya Ramazanova, Margarita Smolyaninova, Olga Suslova, Olga Ushakova, and Galina Zlomanova. • Mary van Kleeck (1883-1972)

  Papers, 1904–72, 71 ft. Social reformer. Correspondence, printed matter, speeches, and miscellaneous documents. Letters from the 1930s of P. A. Bogdanov, S. V. Shakhnovskaya, R. G. Tugwell, T. Paul-Sachs, Paul Douglas, E. C. Lindeman, and van Kleeck speak of the USSR; 1 TL of van Kleeck to M. L. Cooke (5 April 1933) mentions recognition of the Soviet Union. Includes 4 addresses given by van Kleeck: "Observations on Scientific Management in the USSR," 1 December 1932; at a meeting of the Why Club, 7 April 1933, on the USSR; "NIRA vs. PIATILETKA," August 1933; and "World Democracy Needs the Soviet Union," July 1941. Other pertinent materials include radio broadcasts, printed matter, clippings, a collection of signatures for a petition to the president about the USSR, 1934, and a signed statement urging the USSR be invited to a World Economic Conference, n.d. • Ruth Woodsmall (1883-1963)

  Papers, 1906–63, ca. 72 ft. YWCA executive. Includes a letter to or about Countess Vera Tolstoi [Tolstoy], 28 March 1922, an ALS of Merlen Neumann, 17 September 1959, to Woodsmall, about N. Kruschev [Khrushchev], and some photos of Russian scenes, including a nun and the entrance to the Moscow YWCA. Unpublished index (NUCMC 69–507).

• Sophie Satina (1879-1975)

  Botanist, geneticist, and pioneer in female higher education. Born and educated in Russia, Moscow University teacher, emigrated in 1921 and became Smith College professor. "Education of women in pre-revolutionary Russia" (translated from the Russian by Alexandra F. Poustchine), offset, 153 pp.

  Reports, 1960–67, 1 box. Typed copies of reports given at annual meetings of the National Council of Women (not every year).

• William Lloyd Garrison (1838-1909)

  Family papers, 1830–1967, 70 ft. (additions expected). Businessman and reformer. Correspondence, diaries, speeches, photos, printed matter. Includes an ALS of Henry George, Jr., New York, 18 September 1909, to Garrison, which speaks of having a meal with Leo Tolstoi [Tolstoy] on his Tula estate and of Tolstoi's saying he expected soon to see George's father, 3 pp.; an appeal on behalf of the Society of American Friends of Russian Freedom, signed by Garrison as treasurer, for contributions to aid Russians suffering from the famine, 1892?; and a TL to Tolstoi, 1905, signed with the initials W. L. G[arrison]., sending him a collection of William Lloyd Garrison's works and praising Henry George. (NUCMC 69–487)
