Relief worker. 1 manuscript, and a second excerpted from it, narrates her experiences and travels in the USSR, 1926–27. 27 photographs, with attached descriptions, are of Russia. Latrobe Family
Papers, 1796–1947, ca. 3 ft. and 31 vols. Includes diary of a European trip, 1847, and Russian correspondence, 1857–58, of John Hazlehurst Boneval Latrobe (1803–1891), artist, lawyer, inventor, and public official. On one trip to Russia, Latrobe secured from the tsar the sum of $60,000 as allowance for claims for a railroad from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Documents divided into: 32 vols, on arrivals; 9 vols, on foreign imports by port of origin; 21 vols, on vessels entering and clearing, and their cargo; 1 vol. on foreign exports; and miscellaneous other volumes. Redwood Collections
1694–1940, 5 ft. Includes correspondence of John Greene Proud (1776–1865), a merchant, and other members of the Proud family. Proud's letterbooks, 14 March–17 July 1810 and 21 July 1810–19 July 1811, with copies of outgoing correspondence, contain many references to trade with Russia, difficulties getting cargoes to Russian ports during the English and French blockades, and politics obstructing trade. In 10 letters from Proud to Eliza Proud written in St. Petersburg, 1809–13, there are more references to trade with Russia, the French invasion of Russia, the fall of Moscow, and John Quincy Adams, plus descriptions of St. Petersburg, the Hermitage, churches, the harsh winter, outdoor sports, and social activities. A letter, 6 October 1809, of Proud and others, from Hamburg, to J. Q. Adams in St. Petersburg congratulates him on his mission and mentions American trade in Denmark. Another letter, 10 July 1813, of Proud to William T. Proud from London mentions the diplomatic mission of A. Gallatin and J. Bayard, which, with Alexander I in Silesia, cannot succeed. 2 letters, 2 January 1812 and 17 October 1813, from John Proud, Sr. to William T. Proud discuss the difficulties of doing business in St. Petersburg. There is also a letter, 16 November 1821, from Pierre de Poletica to Edward Johnson Coale, expressing, on behalf of Alexander I, the appreciation of the Russian government for Coale's services as vice-consul of Russia in the port of Baltimore and presenting him with a diamond ring. Finally, a letter, 2 October 1928, of G. D. Dorsey in Vichy, France, to Mrs. Francis T. Redwood mentions Pierre Botkine, a writer, of Montreux, Switzerland.
