• Christian A. Herter Papers, 1957-1961

  9 linear feet. Correspondence, memoranda, briefing papers, memoranda of conversations including telephone conversations, speech drafts, messages, and printed materials, created during Herter's service as under secretary and secretary of state and documenting the formulation of U.S. foreign policy as well as the administration of the Dept. of State. Subjects include U.S. relations with the Soviet Union including Berlin, the U-2 incident, 1960 Paris Summit, and 1959 U.S. National Exhibition in Moscow; the United Nations; disarmament; the Congo; Cuba; Laos; and the Brussels World's Fair. Correspondents include Dwight D. Eisenhower, Sherman Adams, Douglas Dillon, Andrew Goodpaster, Gordon Gray, Henry Cabot Lodge, Livingston Merchant, Robert Murphy, Charles Bohlen, and Wilton B. Correspondence and draft correspondence, memoranda including memoranda of telephone conversations, speeches and speech drafts, statements, messages, treaty drafts, agenda, reports, and notes, reflecting Dulles's service as special representative of President Truman to negotiate the peace treaty with Japan (1951) and as secretary of state to President Eisenhower (1953-1959). Includes material relating to the U.S. presidency, U.S. foreign relations, the Cold War, loyalty-security policies of the Dept. of State, Bricker Amendment concerning president versus legislative treaty making power, Yalta agreements, post war European integration, Dept. of State, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, United Nations, National Security Council, Central Intelligence Agency, and Southeast Asia Treaty Organization.
