• Edward Price Bell (1869-1943)

  Papers, 1889–1942, 53 boxes. Journalist. Includes 1 folder of correspondence between Mr. and Mrs. W. Tcherkesoff and Bell, 1904–30. 1 letter by Tcherkesoff, a Georgian nobleman, summarizes his life and career, 4 pp. (NUCMC 59–194)

• Floyd Dell (1887-1969)

  Papers, 1908-present, 3,520 items. Socialist in his youth, editor of the Masses, 1914–17, on staff of the Liberator, 1918–24, and later a novelist and playwright. A defendant in the Masses espionage trial. Correspondence, literary manuscripts, notebooks, photographs, etc. Includes an ALS, 19 May 1927, and a TLS, 1 October 1927, to him from Serge S. Dinamov in Moscow; ALS, 4 February 1930, from Mirra Komarovsky, 2 pp.; correspondence from Theodore Dreiser, 1911–28, 11 items; and Russian notebooks by an unidentified author, found in the collection, 2 items in 1 folder.   Correspondence, 1904–40, 60 items. Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Contains a letter, Moscow, 29 March 1935, from Nikolai Miaskovskii and another from Aleksandr Konstantinovich Glazunov, New York, 18 February 1930.

• Lambert Tree (1832-1910)

  Papers, 1821–1910, 12 boxes. U.S. minister to Russia, 1888–89. Ca. 20 items (mostly correspondence) pertain to his short service in Russia, including a draft statement, 6 pp., regarding diplomatic relations betweeen Russia and Mexico, 16 January 1889. George W. Wurtz, an American diplomat in Russia, is the most prominent correspondent. (NUCMC 60–988)

  Nachalo vsenoshchnomu bdeniiu, Russian manuscript in Church Slavic, from the third quarter of the 17th c, on paper, rubricated, with musical notation ("kriuki"), 124 + 1 p., first leaf and some leaves at end wanting; with a prayer for the health of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich; plus a photostat (negative) of the same, 125 sheets. • William Vorhees Judson (1865-1923)

  Papers, 1896–1947, 790 items. Attache with the Russian army in Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese War; U.S. military attache in Russia, 1917–18. Contains maps, reports, correspondence, memoranda, and other materials pertaining to his activities in Russia, the Russo-Japanese War, and military affairs in Russia. (NUCMC 61–3088)

• Yury Arbatsky (b. 1911)

  Collection on Balkan folk music, ca. 1934–55, size undetermined. Composer, musicologist, and authority on the music and customs of the Balkan rural population. Born in Moscow, where his father was a professor at the Imperial Polytechnic University, he fled the USSR with his family in 1924. Studied music in Prague, Dresden (with Sergei Rachmaninoff), and Leipzig. Fled from the Nazis to the Balkans, where he produced these manuscripts.
