• The Archives holds substantial materials concerning artists born in areas now comprising the Soviet Union. Items for any one artist may be scattered among several different collections. The following selective list includes figures for whom there are such materials as correspondence, photographs, oral history tape recordings, exhibition catalogues, clippings, notes, and other items. (Some of them left their homelands at an early age.) Boris Anisfeld, Alexander Archipenko, Saul Baizerman, Ilya Bolotowsky, David Burliuk, Marc Chagall, Serge Chermayeff, Nicolai Cikovsky, Gleb N. Derujinsky, Naum Gabo, John D. Graham (Debrovski), Morris Kantor, Jacques Lipchitz, Louis Lozowick, Louis Ribak, Joseph Schillinger, Ben Shahn, Moses and Raphael Soyer, Nahum Tschacbasov, Abraham Walkowitz, Max Weber, Adja Yunkers, and Feodor Zakharov.

  In addition, these collections contain some material relating to the Russian Empire/Soviet Union (amounts vary considerably; significance of references could not be checked): papers of Senator William Benton, William Merritt Berger, Maxim Karolik, Rockwell Kent, Hilla Rebay, Theodore Roszak, and William Reinhold Valentiner. Collections that also appear to have relevant holdings include: Alfred Hamilton Barr, Thomas Eakins, Albert Kahn, Elizabeth McCausland, J. B. Neumann, Hudson Walker, Robert Jay Wolff, and Sidney C. Woodward, and American Abstract Artists.

  Much of the preceding material is on microfilm. A Checklist of the Collection, compiled by Arthur J. Breton, Nancy H. Zembala, and Anne P. Nicastro (Spring, 1975) will be revised periodically.

• Louis Lozowick papers, 1898-1974

  5.8 linear feet. Louis Lozowick (1892-1973) was a lithographer from New York, N.Y. Born in Kiev, Russia and came to the U.S. at the age of 14. The Louis Lozowick Papers measure 5.8 linear feet and are dated 1898-1974. Correspondence, writings, business records, printed material and photographs document Lozowick's career. Also included are biographical documents, sketches, and records relating to organizations that interested him. The collection includes a short manuscript about Lasar (El) Lissitsky written by the artist Louis Lozowick. 75–80 photographs relate to the Russian theater and cinema: other photos are of paintings by Russian artists, of M. Kissling, N. Altman, and Chana Orloff. In addition, 50–60 photographs are of Moscow, Russian people, parades, and other scenes, including 1, 1928, of Louis Lozowick and David Shterenberg.Finding aid available: https://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/louis-lozowick-papers-9174
