• Comte Nicolas de Romanzoff (Rumiantsov) (1750-1826)

  Russian minister of commerce and statesman. Presentation inscription, signed, in Gosudarstvennaia torgovlia 1802 goda v raznykh eia vidakh, 1 of 3 vols. for years 1802–1804 that contain detailed tables of Russian commerce. Inscription dated 6 July 1806. (Part of Thomas Jefferson Library, for which there is a multi-volume published guide.)

  Section for European Notables includes: ALS, n.d,, from the duke of Morny, 1811–1865, natural son of Hortense, queen of Holland, and married to Princess Sophie Troubetzkoi, to a friend, referring to his mother-in-law, the Princess Troubetzkoi, and her husband, "les plus grands seigneurs de Russie, d'une fortune collossale, et aussi bonnes gens et simples que possibles" (item 1168); ALS, n.d., from Matilde Letitia Wilhelmine Bonaparte (1820–1904), daughter of King Jerome and married to Prince Anatole Demidov, letter of polite acknowledgment (item 1180); LS, Paris, 3 April 1839, from Prince Anatole Demidov (1813–1870) to Mr. Cherubini, requesting a loge at an approaching concert of the Conservatoire (item 1181); ALS, Breczin, 29 January 1813, from Romain Saltyk Gabriel Oginski to Baron Bignon, explaining that he had left Wilna 2 hours after the departure of Napoleon to avoid capture by the Russians and appealing for help, as he is without resources (item 1219); DS, Drysniaty 17 July 1812, of Charles Nicolas Oudinot (1767–1847), an order during the invasion of Russia, and an ALS, n.d., letter of thanks (item 1220); and DS, Walkowitz 16 October (1813?), of Joseph Anthony Poniatowski (1763–1814), an order to reconnoiter (item 1222). • Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection

  Includes ms. of part of chapter 3, part 2, of Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol' s Mertvyia Dushi ([Moscow], 1855), 20 pp., with cover title and 13 original unpublished drawings of Pavel Petrovich Sokolov (1826–1905). A Catalog of the Gifts of Lessing J. Rosenwald to the Library of Congress, 1943 to 1975 (Washington, 1977).

  Playwright. Carbon typescript, 116 11., of his drama "There shall be no night" (New York City, 1940) about the Russo-Finnish War.

  Liturgical manuscript, 16th–17th c., 1 vol. From a western Ukrainian monastery, possibly in the region of Zbarazh near Tarnopol; for the Ukrainian Catholic (Uniate) Church, with hymns and music, on paper; plus a detailed analysis in Russian of the manuscript by Dr. Panteleimon K. Kovaliv, a Ukrainian philologist and paleographer, 1959, 9 pp.
